The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the February, 2019 election in Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the physical assault on the immediate past Senate Deputy President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, in Nuremberg, Germany.
The former Vice President described the attack as “an uncivilized and undemocratic action” and that he condemns it in totality.
Atiku stated this in a statement released on his official Twitter handle on Monday. He described Senator Ekweremadu as true democrat who champions the fight for the rights of Southeast people.
He said Senator Ekweremadu is “a man who is a specimen of what a democrat should be. A champion of the rights of the people of the Southeast and Nigeria, and a patriotic par excellence”.
He believes that those who assaulted the senator were misguided and that they should have remembered “the patriotic roles he played in saving Nigeria from a constitutional crisis in 2010, when there was lacuna in the Presidency”.
Atiku said that “no one deserves such mob action” and considering the role Senator Ike has played in nation-building and the sacrifices he has made, he deserves to be celebrated.
The 2019 PDP presidential candidate said that despite the incident, himself and his family still hold Senator Ike in the highest esteem, and advised the people behind the assault “to seek peace and pursue it and to learn to give honour to whom it is due”.
